The Emil Bührle Collection has been progressively researching the provenance of all its works since 2002, building on preparatory work accomplished by the two curators whom Emil Bührle appointed between 1948 and 1956.
When the collection entered the Kunsthaus Zurich as a permanent loan in October 2021, the Archive of the Foundation E.G. Bührle Collection, along with the responsibility for the Foundation’s provenance research, was handed over to the Kunsthaus.
On that occasion, the Foundation published a detailed report regarding its provenance research conducted between 2002 and 2021. The report sets out the method employed when compiling the provenance files and explains the criteria used to allocate the individual works to specific provenance categories. In 2023, the Foundation published an update to the 2021 report, with new findings regarding the provenances of 10 works in the collection.
