In 1940, Estella Katzenellenbogen emigrated to California, taking along pictures from her collection (Anja Walter-Ris, Die Geschichte der Galerie Nierendorf, Kunstleidenschaft im Dienst der Moderne, Berlin/New York 1920–1995, Zurich 2003, pp. 255, 276, n. 210), including Messaline (French Painting from David to Toulouse-Lautrec, Loans from French and American Museums and Collections, [exh. cat.] Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 1941, no. 117); documents in the archive of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, show that the painting was sent by, and returned to the Katzenellenbogen family in Santa Monica in 1940/41.
