No fewer than five preliminary studies by Degas for the picture of Madame Camus at the piano are in existence, a portrait study in pastel, a pastel sketch of the full-length figure in the sa me posture as in the picture, a charcoal-pastel sketch of the room with the piano, the opened music and the foot-cushion and the two sketches in charcoal and pastel showing the hanging left arm and the right arm resting on the keyboard.
